Schools are major users of energy in themselves and there are many good
reasons for introducing energy efficiency measures and energy management
into their day-to-day running.
Pupils can become more aware of environmental issues and learning about
energy also fits into many areas of the National Curriculum. Children
who become more energy aware through their schools are also most likely
to influence energy behaviour in their homes.
Energy Solutions is currently working with local schools in North West
London conducting energy audits and giving advice
on the installation of the most appropriate energy conservation measures
and renewable energy technologies. We also work directly with students
and teachers to raise awareness of sustainable energy use within schools
and the wider environment involving them as much as possible in the process
of installing renewables and energy efficiency measures.
We are also involved in the early stages of two new european wide projects aimed at improving energy efficiency and energy awareness in educational establishments.
The
Pattern of Energy Efficiency in Schools (P.E.E.S) project
is an educational project which aims at energy awareness of students attending
secondary school. The main targets are students (15-18 years old) and
their teachers. The project aims to establish a common auditing pattern
of energy consumption within school buildings (tools and know-how is supplied
by a Europe-wide network of Energy Agencies from Spain, Greece, Italy,
Portugal and the UK) involving representattive workgroups of students
and teachers who will co-operate with the technicians of the Energy Agencies.
The project involves an Energy Agency and a pilot secondary school for
each country partner. The pilot school working with Energy Solutions
is John Kelly Boys Technology College.
A detailed resource booklet aimed at year 11 pupils (15-16 yrs olds) has been developed as a teaching aid for the project. It covers;
- the fundementals of energy and its generation
- the science of global warming with an overview of the various measures aimed at reducing it and adapting to its probable effects,
- energy efficiency and the sustainable use of energy
- an overview of renewable energy technologies

The
EDUCA-RUE project aims to improve energy performance in the building
sector at a local level with particular attention on educational buildings
by promoting the ability of local players to guide and orient initiatives
designed to encourage energy saving by means of specific measures and
integrated tools. A specific aim of the project is to speed up the implementation
of the European Directive on Energy Efficiency in Buildings (2002/90/EC)
in Member States at local government level.
