Whole School Approach
The Whole School Approach is an energy saving educational programme aimed at involving the whole school community (pupils, teachers, site managers, bursars and Head teachers) to help reduce the carbon footprint of a school. The initiative provides assistance to allow each school to:
- Appoint an Energy Team
- Create an energy policy and plan for change
- Understand current performance from meter data
- Receive training on how to benchmark performance against published data
- Conduct simple energy surveys
- Run awareness campaigns
- Identify opportunities for investment, e.g. use of renewable technologies
This approach is currently being used within five schools in Brent in order to achieve falls in their energy consumption that meet the carbon reduction targets laid out in that borough’s Climate Change Strategy as well as to support the aims of the Department of Education's Sustainable Schools framework. Energy Solutions is managing this trial on behalf of Brent Council and is run by our Schools coordinator Ben Larby.
There are opportunities for other schools and local authorities interested in following the same approach to do so. This is the perfect way to commence the transition to a sustainable, lower carbon school capable of achieving energy reductions year on year through engagement with the whole school community and beyond.
